Is Food Porn the New Porn? New Food Magazines Excite

Posted by abaldwinson@tng.com on April 10, 2015

Whether we’re “judgy” or not truth is, porn magazines were the top-selling magazines at one time and used to support many that work in the magazine industry. As most of us know, the anonymity of the Internet changed all of that. Today, many mourn the loss and constantly look for the things that will replace it. Lately however, we’ve seen some success stories and positive launches of some great food magazines.

There’s a food movement happening.

It’s been happening for a while, actually. Slow food, Farm-to-Table, Gastro-fast dining, fusion cooking, clean eating, Paleo, gluten free, are just some of the trends and buzz words that describe our affair with food.

Bon-Appetit Food Magazine“It’s on trend to be a foodie. In the past few years, the circulation numbers for Bon Appétit magazine have been at an all-time high. And more than just enjoying gourmet food, millennials feel it is important to be socially responsible foodies…” 1.

The millennials are driving the movement. ” Millennial foodies are literally the ‘tastemakers’ when it comes to what we put in our mouths, where we buy it and how we want it packaged. Food trends tend to trickle up the generational ladder; what Millennials want in food today is what we will all soon be asking for.” 1.

Foodies are sharing their food porn

Amateur cooks are sharing that experience on social media. Foodies are proudly displaying their creations and many are drooling over those and attempting to improve upon what their friends post. “With new digital and social media platforms available, food is being embraced as a vehicle for self-expression and storytelling. The popularity of two anonymous Instagram accounts “@youdidnoteatthat” and “@foodintheair” gives insight into the new ways in which food is used as a prop or held up to a beautiful backdrop to convey the entire vibe and experience while consuming a food item” 2.

Food Magazine Launches

Whether it’s the push to attract the millennial consumer, that is driving the trend, or a push to fish where the fish are, there have been a variety of food magazine launches lately that are a deep dive into the foodie world. Beautiful magazines have a person salivating non-stop as they flip through the magazine pages. It really is food porn! What’s encouraging is that there’s more potential for growth as food porn is something that can be on proud display and not hidden away behind blinders on the magazine racks.

Sift-mFrom the carefully curated pictures of gorgeous meals on many social media platforms, to the success of food magazines and the rise of the new foodie magazines that have been launched recently, I would say there’s definitive evidence that food porn has become the new porn.
What dish will you be salivating over and posting on Instagram this evening?
